ABSTRACT

Traditional transport service providers are aware of the risk of being platformed. They are reluctant to make their data and services available for digital platforms, as they risk to lose the direct relationship with the passengers, have their services commodified and value extracted from the industry by digital players and finally, being displaced by platforms as coordinators of the service. There are calls to impose on transport operators the obligation to share their data with platforms, and even to force them to accept platforms as distributors of their service by legislation, as it is already the case in Finland, in a parallelism with the net neutrality debate in telecommunications. Traditional players face the digitalization dilemma. Should they resist platformization or just embrace change? Whatever the outcome, transportation is a general interest activity, and the general interest has always to be ensured despite the changes, having it taken into consideration in the algorithms if necessary.
