ABSTRACT

Electricity is becoming a distributed system as alternative generation modes (wind, solar, etc.) enables users to generate their own electricity at their premises (prosumers). New interfaces are being created in the form of meters and batteries, which empower users to have further control of their systems. Complementarity with electric mobility provides further interfaces, as identified by Tesla. However, the question is whether a smart grid can balance itself without a centralized coordinator. Digital platforms have the potential to become the new interfaces with the prosumers, coordinating the exchange of electricity between prosumers, at least at a local level, platforming the Distribution System Operators.
