ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I present the variables used in the empirical analysis performed in Chapter 4 . First, there is a discussion on intra-party factors. More specifically, light is shed on some processes (or changes) directly related to the party change framework, such as leadership change. Moreover, among other factors, the chapter also tackles an intra-party determinant related to the personalisation of politics, thanks to the data extracted from a novel expert survey. Subsequently, the chapter focuses on the external determinants of leader selectorate openings. More specifically, the chapter discusses external determinants related both to the party change framework (e.g., electoral setbacks or a party’s opposition status) and the personalisation of politics.
