ABSTRACT

These final pages put forward some points of departure for future research that could benefit from the theoretical framework and empirical results presented in the book. First, the connection between party change and the personalisation of politics, in light of the empirical analysis, is discussed. Subsequently, light is shed on two important themes: the responsibility and responsiveness of party leaders and their representation style. It is argued that party leaders, selected by a wide selectorate and endowed with some intra-party power, might have a higher responsiveness towards different actors and a higher responsibility. Moreover, the same party leaders might have a representation style close to the ‘trustee’ one, because of their wide leader selectorate and high intra-party power.
