ABSTRACT

The simplification and standardization of agriculture landscapes represents a collusion in North America between governments and agrochemical corporations, particularly after World War II. Drawing on Jason W. Moore’s concept of the ‘Capitalocene’, this chapter examines the harm that the simplified and standardized landscapes of capitalist agriculture do to bees of all species. Wild bees are unable to thrive in these monocultured landscapes as their habitat and forage are destroyed, and they are exposed to pesticides and other agrochemicals. In response, managed bees are brought in at ever-increasing numbers to pollinate these monocultures and yet these landscapes also harm managed bees leading to a severe decline in health.
