ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter offers hopeful possibilities for an interspecies alliance that not only confronts capitalist agriculture but presents tangible alternatives to the current agricultural system. In cities, organic urban farms and pollinator gardens are replacing vacant lots and lawns to create bee forage and habitat. In rural areas, agroecological farming practices are being taken up by small-scale farmers and peasants, who are organizing into international, movement-based networks such as La Via Campesina. Instead of scaling up, these forms of agriculture and apiculture can scale out to involve and feed millions of people while also creating diverse landscapes in which non-human animals thrive. In alliance with one another, along with environmentalists and native bee advocates, these movements can help lay the foundation for an agricultural system that allows for the flourishing of people and bees of all species.
