ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter, I reflect on the emergence of locative tourism as a particular way of sensing the city. While locative tourism apps could be interpreted as technological extension of the tourist gaze par excellence, the ethnographic encounters with locative tourism apps in this text expose the multisensory entanglements of tourism and the unevenness of practices of augmentation. Because they rely on the city, its inhabitants, and tourists to animate them, locative tourism apps illuminate the uneven process of mediating the urban as destination space, and tease out the threads of alternative narratives and ways of sensing the city. Ultimately, greater attention must be paid to the embodied experience of the user and the dynamic interplay between the app, the urban, and the (technologically extended) body.
