ABSTRACT

This chapter works out elements of Jean-Paul Sartre’s theory that can inform a Marxist-humanist, critical theory of communication.

Section 8.2 discusses Sartre’s analysis of language and communication in society. Section 8.3 focuses on how Sartre can inform our understanding of communication in capitalism. Section 8.4 gives attention to Sartre’s analysis of ideology. Some conclusions are presented in Section 8.5.
