ABSTRACT

I finish the theoretical part of the book with a chapter on methodology. I demonstrate how the outcome of my research is the result of both a triangulation of data and a triangulation of research methods. I collected and produced data on the same participants both online and offline. Online I observed them in two separate Facebook groups, one with the rest of their ‘thick community’ (Blommaert 2018), the other one with mostly international participants in a ‘thin social group’ (Ibidem). Offline, I have conducted participant observation among my participants in different contexts: during their interactions with out-group members, in complex interactional contexts, and in informal, in-group interactions. Finally, after having analyzed these observation data and mapped how my participants adapted their narratives and discourses about the past of their town, I confronted them with these findings in semi-structured narrative interviews.
