ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 introduces students to the issues of population geography and considers why population topics are often controversial. We outline three lenses of analysis—economic, ecological, and social equity—as ways to help understand and resolve these controversies. The chapter closes with a discussion of whether population growth or decline is the bigger problem as an example of analyzing a population issue using these lenses.
