ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses environmental pollution and its impact on human well-being against the backdrop of a state-centric perspective. The objective is to illuminate the role of governments in addressing public health concerns caused by man-made environmental threats. First, the authors explore increasing scientific awareness regarding environmental degradation, pollution and questions about nature’s ability to cope with man-made destruction. These trends have led to what is today called a global climate change crisis. Drawing on a history and overview of public health issues, the second section of this chapter maps important challenges for societies in terms of salubrity, life expectancy and overall well-being, among others.
