ABSTRACT

The process of changing unhealthy beliefs can be difficult. In Chapter 7 this process is made as easy and empowering as possible for a tired, new mother. Diagrams and graphics are used to easily demonstrate the cycle of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can perpetuate perinatal mood symptoms. Examples of old and new cycles are provided so the reader can see how to make small changes that will positively impact their symptoms. The chapter is broken up into sections: behaviors, physical symptoms, and thoughts. The behavioral section focuses on pleasurable activities to engage in as well as forming social connections. The physical symptoms section emphasizes the impact of exercise, relaxation, and meditation on mood and thoughts. The last section focuses on how to identify negative thoughts and develop a healthier narrative. Examples of common negative thoughts are provided, specifically the issue of shame and guilt which are so common with new mothers. Readers learn how to 1) identify negative moods and thoughts; 2) challenge these thoughts; and instead, 3) develop more realistic, healthy thoughts. Throughout the chapter there are diagrams, case examples, and easy activities to help the reader feel validated and capable, taking small steps toward healing.
