ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 begins with a number of basic premises upon which the book as a whole rests. There are 11 different principles addressed in the first half of the chapter, which are then more fully fleshed out in other chapters. A fundamental foundation for all the concepts addressed is that training is first and foremost about knowing people, not content. An additional premise is that motivation is a moment-by-moment dynamic rather than a global construct and is both value-neutral and bidirectional. After providing the initial premises, the chapter continues by establishing some basic terminology as it will be used throughout all of the chapters. Following this, there is an overview of each of the chapters in the book. This chapter ends by posing several questions for the reader about what the intention and purpose of reading the book is.
