ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 addresses the book's driving principle, motivational immediacy. The concept of motivational immediacy is the core of the book and refers to the tightness of the connection between the learning content the instructor is trying to facilitate and the in-the-moment interest and motivation of the learner. This is distinct from the more globally oriented motivation traditionally addressed in the literature. Central to this chapter is the reality that a learner's motivation to obtain a certification, promotion, new position, or any other outcome, is not the same thing as being motivated in any given moment, to engage and learn specific content. The instructor's true concern is not whether the learner is interested in becoming certified, or credentialed, but in whether the learner is motivated to learn, for instance, at 1:00 pm, in room 334, the fourth Wednesday in August.
