ABSTRACT

Displacement is defined as a rupture of the geographic and social link. The variety of displacement vocabulary reflects its multiplicity. Displaced individuals are often referred to as nomads, refugees, exiles, migrants, emigrants, expatriates, cosmopolitans, or digital nomads. The umbrella term “displacement” is proposed as a more inclusive frame for reflecting on psychological landscapes impacted by relocation (also called dislocation). The growing number of displaced individuals around the globe and the developments in communication technologies call for a renewed inquiry into what constitutes the psychological experience of displacement, as well as its implications for the online practice of psychotherapy.
