ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a leap from the historical to examining the contemporary context for the articulation and realization of anti-racist teaching in Britain. It deals with a look at the whole issue of ‘race’ and ‘racism’ in education in the context of the Swann Report. The response of the education community, like that of the Black community, to the final report of this Committee, which had Lord Swann as its chairperson for its final stage, has been varied and can be placed into three broad categories:The Context of Anti-racist Education. It is important to state that the tripartite typology being used should not be seen as representing the traditional categories of radical/conservative/liberal. It is important in discussions such as these to establish the current climate — the socio-economic, the political, the educational — as a basis as well as a backdrop for discussion and debate.
