ABSTRACT

Migdalia Cruz is an award-winning and internationally produced multi-platform playwright, lyricist, translator, and librettist of more than sixty works. The first Latina to win a Commendation of The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Women Playwrights (1991), her plays break boundaries that cross genres, media, languages, and nations. They are characterized by resilient women seeking individual freedom in extreme circumstances who find “home” in the performance of languages and the hybridization of musical traditions. Although her plays are considered “risky” by the theatrical establishment because they challenge our cultural comfort zone, her theatre always makes us feel more human.
