ABSTRACT

This entry introduces the foundational work of Peruvian theatre collective Cuatrotablas. Since its inception in 1971, Cuatrotablas, led by director Mario Delgado (1947–2016), aimed to create a new theatrical language. In dialogue with the teatro de grupo tradition, Delgado and Cuatrotablas created artistic networks across the world. The group’s creative method focuses on physical and intellectual daily training, to analyze and rewire the ways in which the performers’ bodies have lost and can regain self-physical-consciousness. From a persistent effort to transverse individual and sociopolitical realities, Cuatrotablas stands as a central referent of Latin American theatre.
