ABSTRACT

Conchi León is a playwright, director, actor, and community activist. Having written over sixty plays, directing and performing in countless more, León is one of contemporary Mexico’s most prolific theatre artists. A common thread running throughout her work is the art of storytelling, culminating in her particular style of testimonial theatre. León’s pieces emphasize complex indigenous female characters, inspired by real-life Mayan women, and also contemplate broader questions about human rights and forgotten populations, such Mexico’s incarcerated men and women. To support others in creating their own testimonial theatre, León has also written a practical manual of exercises and reflections.
