ABSTRACT

This entry explores the education, influences, artistic philosophy, and career of Puerto Rican director, performer, playwright, dramaturg, and teacher Rosa Luisa Márquez. The entry discusses the multidisciplinary theatrical work that Márquez produced with Bread and Puppet Theatre, Grupo de Teatro Malayerba, Grupo Cultural Yuyachkani, Osvaldo Dragún, Antonio Martorell, and Teatreros Ambulantes de Cayey. Márquez devises interactive community performances through game-based rehearsal activities to address forms of oppression, discrimination, illness, body image, sexism, homelessness, gentrification, and colonization. Her work is universal yet unique to the Puerto Rican experience, provoking audience reflection on common conditions to resolve conflicts and inspire change.
