ABSTRACT

Rafael Spregelburd is a renowned playwright, director, and actor of Argentina’s post-1983 dictatorship period. In spite of his prowess as an actor, Spregelburd’s dramatic texts underscore the narrative dimensions of theatre. Thus, he highlights and deconstructs communication and the central role of language in the world and in art. He does so by integrating cross-literary and multi-disciplinary references alongside an abundance of verbal, visual, and cultural clues. Shaped by chaos theory, linguistics, art, and metaphysics, his more than forty plays are rich in intertextuality. In spite of their complexity, Spregelburd’s plays are humorous and entertaining and have accrued numerous national and international awards.
