ABSTRACT

El Galpón (est. 1949), is the longest continuously running theatre in South America. Co-founders Atahualpa del Cioppo and César Campodónico named the group after the shed they rented to rehearse and stage performances. They brought European vanguardist theatre, Brechtian aesthetics, as well as Stanislavski’s acting methods to Latin American audiences. In 1952, El Galpón created the Escuela Titiriterosa for puppetry arts. During political exile (1976–1984), El Galpón established their Mexican headquarters, hosted writers, performance troupes, films, and concerts. El Galpón continues to perform and support cultural activities with the Teatro Circular and Socio Espectacular.
