ABSTRACT

Augusto Boal, Brazilian theatre maker, author, and political figure is the founder of Theatre of the Oppressed, an interactive form of theatre-making geared toward social change. This entry summarizes his major contributions to the field, starting with the activist theatre of Teatro de Arena in São Paulo, to the publication and dissemination of Games for Actors and Non-Actors, The Rainbow of Desire, and Legislative Theatre. Special emphasis is placed on Theatre of the Oppressed core elements and techniques, particularly Forum Theatre.
