ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of each of the key connected speech (CS) processes and reviews in more detail the degrees to which they interact with each other depending on the styles and registers being used. It addresses the following questions: What are the key concepts covered so far in this book? How do styles and registers relate to CS? What are levels of CS? How do multiple simultaneous CS processes operate? What is not known about CS? It is clear through the examples that CS processes do not occur in isolation (that is, one process per utterance), but that they occur frequently across North American English speech, and, in some instances, are the result of previous CS processes as well.
