ABSTRACT

Sudden death in January 1907 and subsequent revelation about his true identity are followed by consideration of relevance of Raquez’s work up to the present time. Consideration of his cause of death; rapid burial followed by hosannas to him by colonial press and admirers are juxtaposed with sudden revelation that he was not really Alfred Raquez but Joseph Gervais, a disgraced lawyer from Lille; analysis of his fading reputation and forgotten legacy; return of the repressed as the Internet allows for massive data searches that finally revealed his long-forgotten secret; relevance of his work for contemporary audiences.
