ABSTRACT

The vast majority of research projects on adaptation to climate change utilizes either quantitative or qualitative methods and approaches to answer such research questions. Quantitative approaches and methods have proven very useful when looking for generalizations through comparing numerous cases, they show deficits with regards to understanding the causal relations behind different observations. Numerous scholars have argued that the respective perspectives and methods do not only differ with regards to their units of investigation but also concerning their underlying ontological, epistemological, and methodological foundations. Mixed methods, multi methods, method triangulation – the number of terms and definitions for research that deals with the combination of different methods has continued to grow in recent years. The nested analysis seeks to improve the methodological toolbox of making causal inferences in comparative research by combining quantitative and qualitative methods in an integrated approach.
