ABSTRACT

Representing the core of this book, this chapter introduces the Climate Change Health Adaptation Index (CHAIn), which compares the recognition-, groundwork-, and adaptation-level measures of 192 states aimed to respond to climate change related health risks. The chapter begins with the general concept of the index and discusses the academic literature which the specific categories of the index build on. It then explains and defines the factors and their weights and describes the data basis and coding process. Furthermore, the actual index results are presented in a comprehensive table listing the performance of all 192 states in the respective categories, and global scores based on health risks and adaptation types are presented and discussed in additional charts. Last but not least, the chapter discusses advantages and challenges of the index and outlines potential pathways for further research on the subject.
