ABSTRACT

Drawing on data collected by Virtuous Practice in Nursing study, this chapter presents and analyses responses to a series of ethical dilemmas given to nursing students and to experienced nurses. This chapter considers findings in relation to three of six dilemmas that respondents were asked to consider. Based on the associations made by an expert panel, each of these three dilemmas provides an insight into the choices and reasons made by respondents. The analysis points not only to similarities across the three career stages in terms of the chosen courses of action but also to the prioritisation of different types of reasons between the dilemmas. Finally, we seek to add further depth to the analysis by exploring some implications that are raised for the education of nurses in light of the data presented in this and the previous chapters as well as additional data that are drawn from the interviews with nursing educators and experienced nurses.
