ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to explain the employment and unemployment situation among different social groups at the all-India level and across the states. It covers the unemployment rate, the underemployment rate and the labour force participation rate among different social groups, with special reference to gender. Based on the UPS approach, the unemployment rate at the all-India level (rural + urban) is 5.3% under the others category, while it is 4.8% under the OBC category, followed by 4.6% under the SC category and the lowest (4.5%) under the ST category in 2013–2014. In rural areas, the ST category has the lowest unemployment rate (4.3%), whereas it is highest in the others category (5.3%). In urban areas, unemployment is lowest (5.3%) under the OBC category, while it is highest in the SC category (5.8%). With reference to underemployment (UPS + SS approach) (rural + urban) in the others category the highest percentage of people (70%) worked for 12 months during the reference period, followed by 60% under the OBC category, 52% under the SC category and 48% under the ST category.
