ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the development of Sun Yatsen’s special relationship with the Hawaiian Star newspaper during the 19 years of this newspaper’s independent existence, from its inception in late March 1893 up until the end of June 1912, when it merged with the Evening Bulletin, another mainstream Honolulu daily, to become the Honolulu Star-Bulletin from 1 July 1912 onwards. The Hawaiian Star was a new Honolulu newspaper sufficiently self-conscious to call itself the ‘Star’ in its first issue. The Independent was of course pointing out the Star’s arguable hypocrisy, and its alleged logical fallacy, in supporting Sun and his revolutionary Chinese associates on Hawaiian soil. The peaceful annexation of the Hawaiian Islands by the USA took place on 12 August 1898, at a ceremony at Iolani, the former royal palace of Honolulu.
