ABSTRACT

The promulgation of the national security law in late June 2020 had immediate and profound impacts on the education sector. The most important impact was the beginning of the Hong Kong style of “Cultural Revolution.” This Cultural Revolution in the HKSAR has been evolving since June 30, 2020. It comprises four major components of transformation: teachers; the Professional Teachers’ Union; the struggle over a politically “incorrect” public examination question and the “yellow” officers of the Hong Kong Examinations Assessment Authority; and students and student unions. However, a hallmark of the Cultural Revolution in Hong Kong was that it was led by highly nationalistic and patriotic Chinese and triggered by the determination to transform the political culture of targeted citizens and institutions. The impact of conducting the Hong Kong style of Cultural Revolution could be felt, namely the migration of teachers and students from Hong Kong to other places.
