ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the development of the PRC's education reform which had an immediate impact on Hong Kong, where patriotic and national education has begun extensively. The HKSAR government, as required by the national security law, has to deepen and broaden the national security education, patriotic education and national education. The year 2021 witnessed all the reforms undertaken in all these areas, including various extra-curricular activities for students, training sessions for teachers, governmental subsidies for schools, EDB's personnel changes to propel the reforms further, the efforts made by pro-Beijing groups and elites to push for faster transformations, the utilization of the GBA as a platform to conduct patriotic education and united front work, the active participation of Hong Kong's universities in their campus expansion in the GBA, the migration of many teachers and students to overseas countries and the inevitable adaptation of all the stakeholders (principals, teachers, students and parents) to the environmental changes and the curriculum reforms at the school level.
