ABSTRACT

The results of the first stage of research based on the online questionnaire are discussed in the present chapter. The sociodemographic profile of the study group is outlined in the first section emphasising its heterogeneity. All the integral components of FLP, such as language practices, management and ideologies of the researched families, were meticulously analysed. A certain amount of consistency between reported parental language practices and their language management strategies is disclosed by the questionnaire findings. Two corresponding patterns in parental beliefs about bilingual upbringing were revealed. First of all, the monoglossic theory of bilingualism proposing the existence of two separate linguistic systems proved to still prevail in parental language ideologies. In addition, they informed the children’s heritage language proficiency. Last but not least, a heteroglossic understanding of bilingualism among the researched parents seemed to dominate as many parents actually tended to show a certain degree of inclination towards the understanding of bilingualism as a fluid construct. To a certain extent, this chapter also serves as an introduction to the second stage of research entailing case study reports of the selected mixed families.
