ABSTRACT
Based on the collected findings, various approaches to bilingual upbringing in the Polish immigrant community in Melbourne will be discussed in the three chapters that follow. Each chapter serves as a separate case study report providing an overview of language ideologies, practices and management in the selected transnational families. At the same time, they present different approaches to heritage language maintenance. In this chapter, flexible code-switching practices will be discussed in the Anderson family. The Polish mother, Joanna, sustains the interaction with her sons by the frequent use of the repetition strategy. In her family, Polish and English exist side by side as reflected in her sons’ perception of frequent mixing of the two languages spontaneously. Her language management is established on prioritising language production over linguistic correctness. Through language portraits, created by Joanna’s sons, an insight into their truncated diversity of linguistic repertoires unfolds.
