ABSTRACT

The second case study report involves the King family where a restrictive and consistent OPOL strategy has been implemented by Agnieszka, the mother of two girls. In general, her language management style is to be perceived as highly restrictive and controlling. In an attempt to keep the children speaking a minority language, she pretends that she understands less of a language than she actually does. Her use of Polish for parent-child interactions and the maintenance of Polish cultural traditions and rituals is of paramount importance as these primarily contribute to language vitality that secures intergenerational transmission. To enhance her daughters’ acquisition of Polish, the girls are disconnected from English during the summer break by being fully immersed in the Polish language and culture in Poland. Although she is aware of the immense invisible work she is doing, that is paid with stress and a heavy workload, her aim is to pass on her cultural heritage to the children. She becomes a typical example of hyper-parenting attempting to maximise her children’s learning potential. Her interpretation of bilingual upbringing fits the commonly high elite bilingual parents.
