ABSTRACT

The Icelandic saga, written by an anonymous author in the thirteenth century, describes events set three centuries earlier. The events described in this extract are set in pre-Christian Iceland – the conversion of the country to Christianity is described as part of the saga. The background to this extract is as follows: Hrut agrees to marry Unn, daughter of Mord Fiddle. On discovering that he must travel to Norway to secure an inheritance, Hrut strikes an agreement with Mord that Unn will wait for him as his betrothed for three years. When the time comes for Hrut to return to Iceland, Gunnhild asks if he has another woman there: when Hrut lies, Gunnhild places a curse on him to prevent him from ever enjoying his other relationship.
