ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 introduces real-world examples of place-based creative economic development strategies, including alternative funding approaches, arts districts, placemaking, artist live-work spaces, and pro-arts zoning and building code changes. These examples can be used as models of what to do, or, in some cases, what not to do. The potential successes and unintended consequences exhibited in these stories illustrate how various cities manifest similar concepts to different ends. The reader will learn about how unforeseen events can drive policy change, what it takes to be an arts entrepreneur, the role planning can play in developing arts and place-based development strategies, and the role of artists in gentrification. These practical takeaways will leave the reader with ideas applicable to their communities and cities.
