ABSTRACT

This chapter provides several examples of networks of genres in the context of professional and public communication of science. The focus is on the use and interactions between the visual and verbal modes and the functionalities of intertextuality, hypertextuality, and interactivity that the genre networks rely on. For the sake of diversity, each case study centers on a distinct type of genre collectivity and looks into layers of textual analysis in different ways. Each case study showcases different instances of intersemiotic relations and distinct processes of knowledge recontextualization and discoursal uptake. The cases are both descriptive and interpretative and therefore illustrate and discuss critically how rhetors repurpose and refocus specific contents from a previous text to make them suitable for the new context, and how they address the specific needs of their imagined audiences.
