ABSTRACT

The “platform” in a scene is a concept that is widely discussed in improvised performance, but not always clearly understood. This chapter examines in detail exactly what a platform is and how actors can create one. It explains how the platform is essential to the success of a scene and how having the right attitude in the first 20 seconds of a scene can change everything. It then goes on to describe the notion of a “tilt.” The tilt incites change and sets the story in motion. By detecting tilts, the actors are encouraged to engage with the truth of their interaction and avoid imposing invented ideas on a scene. They will understand the myriad of offers that are available to launch their story.
