ABSTRACT

Once a scene is underway the biggest challenge is to keep it on track and maintain an engaging performance. This chapter proposes a collection of specific techniques for doing this. It presents these solutions by teaching the reader how to direct an improvised scene. Directing impro is one of the most efficient ways of accelerating an improviser’s scene work skills. When an improviser directs, he learns to watch a scene in the same way an audience watches it. All the obvious narrative threads are always visible to the audience. Improvisers have to learn to see what the audience sees. Like this, they will never lose track of what the essence of their story is. This chapter also provides tips for ending scenes in a satisfying way.
