ABSTRACT

For a story to be considered a story, something or someone must experience change. However, for an improviser change is something that provokes fear. Our brains search stability, so an improviser must learn how to change and equip him/herself with tools to initiate this in different ways. This chapter presents the idea of the three change tools: Physical, Emotional, and Status. It then provides a series of exercises to specifically work on Status. Status defines how human being’s behavior positions them in relation to one another. In improvisation we use it to create characters, relationships and for stimulating narrative.
