ABSTRACT

How should you go about starting an improvised long form story? What are the key elements that you need to establish to build a solid foundation for your narrative? This chapter provides solutions to assist you in creating a solid base for any narrative improvisation. Through simple exercises it will allow you to create colorful characters and locations in your story universe. The emphasis is on variety and diversity. The trap in narrative long form is getting stuck on a single narrative thread early on. When this happens the story universe is often weak, and the narrative will lose steam too early in the show. To fuel your performance, you need to work on establishing a rich story universe with diverse possibilities. It’s like preparing a series of surprise boxes that you can delve into later in the show. Focus is also given to the relational stakes between the cast of characters. It is through manipulating and exploring these stakes that your true story will appear.
