ABSTRACT

No matter how you feel about the notion of narrative, one thing is certain: when you step on stage you are about to tell a story. This chapter offers a down-to-earth view of what makes a story, a story. It proposes that we all know exactly how a story works. We are all experts in narration thanks to the thousands of stories we have heard and told in our lives. All we really need to do is listen to our instincts. This chapter puts words on our instincts to enable us to understand and better use them to our advantage. It presents the three fundamentals of story: transformation, relation, and reincorporation. It also defines story structure as: platform, tilt, rollercoaster, and end platform. These notions will be explored and explained through theory and practical exercises.
