ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book develops an (ontic-oriented) epistemic conception of scientific explanation that incorporates epistemic considerations relating to contextual elements, extra information, and pragmatic issues. It suggests a deflationary understanding of model structure by coupling with a holistic view of models and modeling. The book proposes a holistic view of how biological models can be explanatory based on the basis of the holistic view of models and modeling. The holistic view draws heavily on Woodward’s interventionist account of scientific explanation and Bokulich’s structural account of model explanation.
