ABSTRACT

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach provides an effective framework for individualized, inclusive early childhood education. This chapter describes the third component of UDL, which guides educators to provide multiple means of engagement that support each child’s curiosity and desire to learn. A focus on engaging students and supporting their unique interests and abilities is critical to ensure each child can learn how to learn and succeed in school. This approach provides teaching strategies to make teaching and learning meaningful and accessible to young learners from different experiences, cultures, abilities, and languages. For the second edition, this chapter has been updated to include strategies to support multiple means of engagement during emergency remote learning.
