ABSTRACT

After exploring the possible choices, the next step is to settle on one option. The ability to reflect on decisions might be described as one of the factors which separate humans from animals. Major and especially life-changing decisions require reflection. Different possibilities exist for making decisions: deliberately or unconsciously; spontaneously, accidentally or influenced by rationality and knowledge; affected by experience or, especially, chance. David Hume, the eighteenth-century philosopher, evaded the dilemma through his concept of determinism. The science of decision-making and choice is a recent addition to the discipline of the humanities, established in the past sixty years. Divination methods mentioned in some parts of the Bible as possible methods for making decisions are condemned in others. I.
