This chapter looks briefly at moving from an experience of difference to an awareness of that difference and asks about one's own experiences of being different. Realization of being different can make a person feel vulnerable. As social animals, our protection is from being part of the herd. Being outside of the herd makes one feel unsafe. Everyone is unique, so everyone can identify with the feeling of being different to those around them. The author wants the readers to skim through their memories that inform them not of their ‘otherness’ to those around them, but of their ‘withness’ with them, The chapter concludes that people get connected socially with others in a different way from each other.
