ABSTRACT

This chapter argues the work of James Baldwin, especially three lectures he delivers: “A Talk to Teachers,” “Living and Growing in a White World” and “The Free and the Brave” should be foundational in teacher candidates’ preparation. “Welcome to America’s Schoolhouse” includes Baldwin’s instructional advice to European American teachers and African American teachers, respectfully. Interracial solidarity, the N-word and Baldwin’s significance at this moment of racial awakening in the U.S. are discussed. The chapter opens, describing the author’s personal discovery of James Baldwin and how his work continues to enrich his research, teaching and service.
