ABSTRACT

This chapter centers James Baldwin’s debate with William F. Buckley at the Cambridge Union during a critical time in the Civil Rights movement and his writing of “A Letter to My Nephew” to illustrate the meaning of “going for broke.” The eloquence of Baldwin as a person who bears witness and writes about what he observes along with his unique attention to African American’s history, culture, humanity and freedom are exhibited in the chapter. Pam and Ann return with more thoughts about Jimmy Baldwin and his influence on their teaching of African American students.
