ABSTRACT

This chapter explains why it was necessary for James Baldwin to leave America and travel to Europe. Baldwin’s self-discovery, identity formation, place and role in America are considered; and his motivation to return to the United States from Europe is explained. Baldwin’s apprehension about his first trip South, along with meeting, observing and being awed by young civil right workers is presented. “Living and Growing in a White World,” Baldwin’s speech at Castlemont High School to a predominantly all African American audience is discussed. Finally, Pam and Ann deliberate over Baldwin’s speech at Castlemont and Ann’s by chance “meeting” of Baldwin at a local coffee shop in Harlem is introduced.
